PALMIRA, Indiana – Two men were fatally shot after a police officer and two good Samaritans stopped on the South Indiana Highway to help a driver who was stopped on the road, police said.
The shooting came on Monday night after a Palmira police officer stopped to help the “apparently blocked driver” on 135 State Road, Indiana police said, but did not say what caused the shooting or who fired the shots.
When the officer arrived, two good Samaritans also stopped in a pickup truck to help, but “within seconds of getting out of their cars, shots were heard” at the scene south of Palmyra, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Palmyra. Louisville, Kentucky, a police statement said.
State police did not provide further details, saying in a statement that investigators did not say how many weapons were involved, how many shots were fired or who fired the shots.
The driver of the jeep, 31-year-old Justin Moore from Owensboro, Kentucky, and one of the good Samaritans, 24-year-old Jacob Tyler McClanahan from Corydon, Indiana, were killed in the shooting, police said.
The autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, according to Indiana State Police, which is investigating at the request of Harrison County authorities.
The Palmyra officer was slightly injured, with minor scratches and no gunshot wound, a sergeant said. Kerry Hulls, State Police spokesman.
Hulls said he would speak to investigators later Tuesday to see if more information could be spread about the shooting, but said they may want to wait for Wednesday’s autopsy, “so we can say without question what what happened and who shot whom. “
“Last night they just didn’t have the answers,” he told the Associated Press.
