Apple iOS 15.5 Edition: Do I need to upgrade?

Apple iOS 15.5 has arrived and this is an extremely important update, but not for the reasons you can expect. So do you need to upgrade? Here’s everything you need to know.

Tip: Check this page because I will keep it up to date if / when new issues are found. I will pronounce my final sentence in a week.

Who is it for?

Apple iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5 are released for all iOS 15 compatible devices, meaning iPhone 6S (2015) and newer and iPad Mini 4 (2015) and newer. I need to warn you that there are now concerns about slowing down the automatic update process, so the best method is to run it manually by going to Settings> General> Software Update. If you are using newer beta software (see the “Forward” section at the end), you must unsubscribe your device before the update appears.

Note: This guide does not focus on older iOS or iPadOS updates, but I will address the relevant issues in these guides.

Violators of transactions

Jailbreakers, nothing has changed. Unc0ver and checkra1n continue to be hampered by iOS 15, and with critical security updates in this update (spoilers), I would suggest changing your priorities and upgrading.

For everyone else, the first 24 hours are promising. Although I’ve seen isolated reports from upgraders about poor network acceptance, failed wake-up calls during calls, and missing FaceTime notifications, so far there has been no momentum around any of them. The Reddit and Apple support communities are also quiet.

As always, I will continue to monitor this as more users upgrade.

So what do you get?

The official notes for Apple’s iOS 15.5 version read as follows:

– Wallet now allows Apple Cash customers to send and demand money from their Apple Cash card

– Apple Podcasts includes a new setting to limit episodes stored on your iPhone and automatically delete older ones

– Fixes an issue where home automation triggered by arriving or leaving people may fail

Not surprisingly, the release notes do not mention the biggest news in iOS 15.5: the new Macs have leaked into their beta code. Expect big news from Apple here at WWDC on June 6.

In addition, the potentially transformative introduction to iOS 15.5 is the ability to now receive money through Apple Cash, not just send it. This can have a huge impact on small businesses, stall traders, etc. It is also useful to get friends / family to pay off their debts quickly!

Still, the most important reason to upgrade to iOS 15.5 is security. The official security page of iOS 15.5 reveals at least 34 security fixes. The good news is that there are no known Zero Day vulnerabilities (flaws that hackers actively exploit before a fix can be issued), but there is a wide range of areas affected, including: graphics, memory, Apple Notes, shortcuts, WiFi and WebKit (the engine that powers Safari) and Safari Private Browsing.

Apple iOS 15.5 Sentence: Upgrade

Despite the launch of a trash can, iOS 15 is already a very sleek platform. Several releases in recent months have had serious problems, and iOS 15.5 looks like another solid entry on this list, as Apple stops it before iOS 16.

For the most hesitant, check out this guide. I will continue to update it with any relevant flaws or features I find and you will receive my final sentence here in a week.

The way forward

At the time of publication, Apple has not released a new beta version of iOS 15, and although there are probably a few “minor points” (iOS 15.5.1, etc.), I would be surprised to see another major upgrade (iOS 15.6) before launch on iOS 16.

And we’ll see about that soon. Apple will debut iOS 16 at WWDC 2022, which launches on June 6, and early leaks suggest that our hopes must be high. Developers and public beta versions will follow, although reports say the test compilations are more buoyant than normal, which can slow it down.

In recent years, Apple has established a one-good-one-bad model for generations of iOS releases (iOS 13 – bad, iOS 14 – good, iOS 15 – bad), so hopefully iOS 16 won’t break the trend. We owe good.
