With only three weeks left until WWDC, Apple has released iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5 for all iOS 15 devices. This is a much smaller update than 15.4, which brought many new features to the iPhone and iPad.
The new update is mostly bug fixes and security updates, but there are a few new features that users will notice. According to Apple’s release notes, the Wallet and Podcasts apps received the most attention:
- Wallet now allows Apple Cash customers to send and demand money from their Apple Cash card.
- The outdated iTunes Pass has been rebranded as an Apple Account, and support for Italy’s Bancomat and Belgium’s Bancontact has been added to Apple Pay in Italy.
- Apple Podcasts includes a new setting to limit episodes stored on your iPhone and automatically delete older ones.
In addition, Apple has fixed a problem with HomeKit that triggers some automations triggered by arrivals or departures. In addition, there are more than two dozen security updates in iOS 15.5, some of which have the ability to execute random code.
Apple also removed Universal Control from the beta version of iPad OS 15.5 and macOS Monterey 12.4, although there doesn’t seem to be any new functionality. New frameworks for SportsKit and Apple Music Classical have also been spotted in beta, although not yet implemented in the operating system. It is possible that iOS 15.5 will lay the groundwork for new features or hardware released on the WWDC, but this remains to be seen.
To download and install iOS 15.5 or iPadOS 15.5 on your iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app and tap General, then Software Update and follow the prompts.
