UPDATE 11.30pm: Following the announcement of Fall Guys for free play earlier tonight, developer Mediatonic has provided some additional details regarding the PC version, confirming that the game will be removed from Steam on June 21 – although existing users will be able to to continue playing on the Valve platform.
The news is not particularly surprising, of course; Epic Games acquired Mediatonic in 2021, and while the developer insisted that the Fall Guys would “remain available on Steam” at the time, the money went to him on a similar Rocket League trajectory – which eventually threw Steam in favor of the Epic Games Store. after it became free to play after the acquisition by Epic.
So here we are; from June 21, when Fall Guys is removed from Steam, new players will only have access to the game by downloading its launcher from the Epic Games Store. However, existing Steam users will not be forced to make a mandatory move and will be able to continue playing as before, with Mediaonic promising that the Steam version “will continue to receive all the usual updates”, including new seasons, patches and features.
Fall Guys – Free for all Trailer.
ORIGINAL STORY 18:35: The game of Knockout Battle Royale Fall Guys will be free to play from June 21, announced the developer Mediatonic. In addition, the change in the monetization model will coincide with the long-awaited release of the game on Switch and Xbox, as well as the arrival of a new version of PlayStation 5 and its debut in the Epic Games Store.
As part of its transition to a free game, Fall Guys – which celebrates its second birthday later this year – will push the reset button and re-launch it on June 21 with a new season, which Mediatonic calls Season 1: Free for All promising “piles of new challenges and rewards”.
As with the Rocket League before it, which similarly became free after being looted by Epic Games, Fall Guys will adapt a monetization model that will be immediately familiar to Fortnite players. This means the arrival of a new paid premium Season Pass – which can be purchased with a new currency in the game known as Show-Bucks – which will sit next to the existing free level.
To help Fall Guys facilitate the transition of Fall Guys from paid to free play – and “thank the world community … for their support” – Mediatonic will provide all existing players with access to a special Legacy Pack that will include various cosmetic items and the first Season Pass for free.
Fall Guys will be available on Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S / X and Epic Games Store from June 21, and cross-game and cross-development will be supported on all platforms. However, Mediatonic has not yet discussed the future of the game on Steam – especially if those who paid for it on the Valve platform will have to go to the Epic Games Store if they want to continue playing – but I will update this story as more is shared.
