Google searches for Stephen Del Duca rose sharply on the night of the debate, when some voters introduced themselves as the “new” leader of the Liberal Party for the first time.
Del Duca took over the Liberal Party in March 2020, just as the pandemic hit, and before the election campaign he also lost his place in Vaughn’s ride. Both factors contributed to the lack of exposure before the order was issued.
Google searches for Del Duca are relatively low compared to other party leaders, in particular the progressive conservative Doug Ford, who is constantly sought after more often than others.
But around 7pm on Monday, Google Trends showed that the number of people searching for his name had risen.
“I think Stephen Del Duca has managed to show at least a little of himself,” said Mohamed Ali, senior consultant at Crestview Strategy, for the evening of the debate. “I think he had the highest Google search rate during the debate, just recalling the fact that not many voters know who he is.”
All party leaders saw a surge in Google searches on the night of the debate, with Ford and NDP leader Andrea Horvat second, followed by Green Party leader Mike Schreiner.
Over the past few days, more people have also called for an Ontario election.
