Gov. Ron DeSantis bans protests in front of private homes in Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law Monday banning protests outside private homes in the state of Sunshine.

Violators will be given a chance to disperse after an official warning and will be subject to arrest and up to 60 days in prison if they do not comply.

DeSantis signed the law after protesters gathered in the homes of Supreme Court judges in recent weeks to lobby for abortion rights.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Judges Samuel Alito, Brett Cavanaugh and Amy Connie Barrett forced protesters to gather in front of their homes in Virginia.

“Sending disobedient mobs to private homes, as we have seen in angry mobs in front of the homes of Supreme Court justices, is inappropriate,” DeSantis said in a statement. “This bill will provide protection for those living in residential communities, and I am glad to sign it in law.

Democrats objected to the move, saying it violated the rights of the First Amendment.

U.S. Sen. Keith Perry of Gainesville sponsored the bill through the Florida Senate.

“This bill recognizes the right to privacy, security and peace that we all deserve in our own homes,” he said in March in support of the law.

The new legislation is due to take effect on October 1st.
