Judd Apatow erupts Mark Esper immediately after his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Judd Apatow attended The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday to promote his documentary, George Carlin’s American Dream. Apatow was the second guest on the show, the first being Mark Esper, former Secretary of Defense Donald Trump’s defense minister. Esper was there to promote his new book on the absurd things the former president did during his rule. Apatow struck no blows when Colbert asked him what Carlin would think of Esper.

“I don’t think George Carlin would like Mark Esper,” Apatow said. “Carlin’s whole idea was that people with money manipulate the whole system. So if anyone knows that Trump is a maniac, you’d think the day after he was fired was the day to go: “Hey, he wanted to shoot all of George Floyd’s protesters in the leg.” But he waited a year to write a book and make money. And I think that was all of George Carlin’s job, namely that they didn’t care about you.

In Esper’s book The Sacred Oath, the former cabinet member said he struggled to leave, but decided to stay to prevent the president from doing something catastrophic. With that in mind, he also shared stories about Trump wanting to fire rockets in Mexico to destroy the drug cartel, as well as his desire to shoot protesters who gathered after the assassination of George Floyd.

While Colbert seemed more inclined to give Esper the benefit of doubt, Apatow seemed ready to make things uncomfortable with the other guest in the green room.

The latest show with Stephen Colbert airs this week at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
