This is the design of Sonos’ upcoming Sub Mini

Sonos announced its most affordable soundtrack to date last week. But some of the company’s loyal customers were disappointed with the lack of a cheaper subwoofer to go with the new Sonos Ray. It felt like the perfect opportunity to announce a product that had been talked about for months. The only subwoofer Sonos currently sells is the $ 749 Subwoofer, which costs more than Ray and Beam – so it’s hard to justify as an accessory under these conditions.

But although there was no announcement last week, The Verge may confirm that Sonos is approaching the launch of a smaller, cheaper subwoofer that will be able to pair wirelessly with Sonos Ray, Beam and Arc. Rumors of such a device surfaced a few months ago after Sonos accidentally scattered some early details in its mobile app. At that time, the screenshots revealed the name of the product – Sub Mini – and The Verge can now further confirm this brand.

More importantly, for the first time since I saw an image of the upcoming product, I can share a preview of the overall design of the Sub Mini. In an earlier leak, Sonos described it as a “smaller, cylindrical subwoofer,” and The Verge’s 3D rendering matches that. The Sub Mini is the Sonos S37, coming directly after the S36, which ended up being a $ 279 Ray.

Ask any subwoofer owner and he will probably guarantee what a huge difference the subwoofer makes when watching movies or even listening to music. When the Sonos soundtracks recognize a connected subwoofer, they tune the audio output to focus on higher frequencies, leaving the low rumble and rattling bass of the dedicated subwoofer.

The main thing that distinguishes the Sub Mini hardware is an extended vertical cut in the shape of a pill right in the middle of the device. It so happens that the regular Sub has a rectangular neckline, so Sonos seems to have settled on this both for functionality and as a kind of design feature. In the case of the Sub, there are acoustic ports on both sides, so it would follow that the Sub Mini will have a similar interior design – albeit with smaller, less powerful components.

The specifications, specific launch date and price details for the Sub Mini have not yet been learned, as well as the actual dimensions and hardware dimensions. But the wide-brimmed design seen here should mostly be similar to what Sonos announced in the coming months. The Verge turned to the company for comment.

Speaking to investors in February, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence said: “In fiscal 2022, we are focused on launching new products in our existing product categories. Like the Sonos Ray, the Sub Mini will meet these criteria and fit into the company’s home cinema range.

Sonos’ fiscal year runs until September 2022, so all announcements in a completely new product category (such as wireless headphones) will have to wait until the fall. According to CFO Brittany Bagley, Sonos has made five product launches so far in 2022. This number apparently includes the second generation Beam (launched last September) in addition to the newer Sonos Roam SL, the Sonos Ray soundtrack, the new colors of the standard Roam and Sonos Voice Control.

According to people familiar with the matter, Spence recently expressed internal frustration with Sonos staff at the increase in leaks. In addition to unveiling Ray’s design weeks before its official launch, The Verge also canceled Sonos’ announcement of its own voice control service, which will be available to customers in the United States on June 1.

“I know it’s hard for all of you, but … we want to make sure that when we really have it ready, we’ll present it to the world and then we talk about it,” he said during a call about last week’s earnings. how a recent acquisition could affect future Sonos products.
