Proponents of Russia’s hardline are calling for the death penalty for Azovstal soldiers whom the Kremlin portrayed as Nazis to justify the invasion.
Ukrainian soldiers evacuated from the last stand of the Mariupol steel plant must be executed, Russian lawmakers and former military commanders said as they called on Vladimir Putin to thwart plans to exchange prisoners.
Leonid Slutsky, a prominent Russian lawmaker, said: “If their horrific crimes against humanity are proven, I would like to revive my idea of lifting the moratorium on the death penalty in Russia and allowing the court to consider its use.”
Margarita Simonyan, head of Russia’s RT news channel, quoted sources on Tuesday as saying Azovstal fighters had been taken to a Russian prison.
The fall of Mariupol is a rare victory for Putin after he reduced his invasion and suffered losses in the Eastern Donbass region. However, this has led to a huge cost for resources.
