Marvel fans are upset by She-Hulk’s CGI in a new trailer

Hulk has long been pushed aside in the MCU, as the Green Avenger has not participated in a 2008 solo outing on The Incredible Hulk – in which he played Edward Norton. Mark Ruffalo has taken on the role of Bruce Banner for eight live appearances, but is not yet in the solo spotlight again. To some extent, everything is changing this year with She-Hulk.

The nine-episode Disney + legal comedy will feature Tatiana Maslanie as Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s cousin who receives her own gamma green transformation after a blood transfusion. Marvel Studios has introduced many CGI characters over the years, but this will be the first time a motion capture character will take the lead in Disney +.

As the shutdown of VFX tormented Hollywood productions and caused delays due to the backlog caused by COVID-19, Marvel Studios could not have chosen a much worse time for this step. As reports show that the gap is just beginning to narrow, the first full look at She-Hulk has just debuted and not everyone is happy.

She-Hulk CGI creates viral controversy

Marvel Studios’ debut trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney Attorney was met with controversy on social media over a debate over the quality of CGI present in the footage.

The popular star on social networks Supes shared his praise for most elements of the series, but noted that “CGI does not look great:”

“She-Hulk Lawyer” looks a LOT of fun! Tatiana Maslani looks perfect for the role. Disgust. Professor Hulk. CGI doesn’t look great, but I still think this show will be an absolute blast! “

TikTok creator Andrews Visual compares the effects to “live video game cutting:”

“Marvel is a multi-billion dollar franchise, I don’t care that She-Hulk is a TV show, it has to look better than that, it looked like a cut-off of a live video game. So much Netflix / Amazon shows MUCH CGI and VFX much better. I see no excuse. I hope it will improve. “

Writer Christopher Mark commented on the “unfinished and rubbery CGI”, excluding any budget apologies compared to Disney + ‘s Star Wars series:

“She-Hulk looks like a lot of fun as a show, but the real CGI looks really unfinished and rubbery. I’m aware it’s television, but things from STAR WARS are doing well and have budgets to adjust.”

Twitter user @cgichipmunk drew particular attention to how Hulk’s VFX looks far fuller than She-Hulk’s:

“Why does Hulk’s CGI look perfect in this trailer, but She-Hulk looks so bad?” I’m absolutely aware that unfinished VFXs often appear in trailers, but man, all her photos look bad. “

@ashCr__ defended the VFX artists behind She-Hulk, calling the complaints “ridiculous quirks” as this is just a trailer and the first of its kind:

“Where is the respect for VFX artists? Most people have no idea how difficult the job is. The CGI complaints in the trailer are the most ridiculous jokes I’ve seen from Marvel fans. #SheHulk. “

Russ Milheim of Direct once again celebrates She-Hulk’s fun potential, but said the team still has “a lot of work to do for her VFX:”

“I really hope She-Hulk sticks to the landing. It can be really fun and unique to ride. They still have a lot of work to do for her VFX.

Matt Römbke – also from The Direct – responded with a more positive outlook for VFX, sharing his belief that “if it’s as bad as it gets, we’ll be fine:”

“For the first stage, I can stand behind VFX. If that’s as bad as it gets, we’ll be fine. “

Can She-Hulk fix its CGI problems before it goes on the market?

a miracle

There’s no denying that some of She-Hulk’s CGI doesn’t look very appropriate in the debut trailer. Mark Ruffalo’s Smart Hulk looks appropriately polished in most scenes, while Tatiana Maslani’s She-Hulk stands out as somewhat unfinished in most of her videos.

Marvel Studios – like most of the film industry – has been experiencing major difficulties recently due to VFX delays. With only a handful of select VFX production companies trusted by major Hollywood studios, the industry has lagged far behind in photos to be completed due to COVID-19, which has slowed many blockbusters.

She-Hulk is a series of nine episodes starring an entirely CGI-created character, making the project a huge undertaking in terms of post-production. Although there are still three months until the premieres of the legal comedy at Disney +, so there is enough time for these shots to be polished before they are released.

Some rushed to justify the quality by warning that She-Hulk was a streaming show, not a big screen movie. The Mandalorian should only serve as proof that Disney is more than willing to pay budget-level budgets for Disney +, although there is no denying that this may be the most ambitious project of Marvel Studios so far in terms of CGI.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a perfect example of a CGI character who looked awful on the first peak, but the studio managed to fix things in time for their release. There is no doubt that when the next look at She-Hulk arrives, things should look much more polished.

Disney unveiled its debut trailer during its Upfront event in 2022, which highlighted its upcoming television ventures. The Mouse House naturally had to premiere something new from MCU – perhaps its biggest brand – and She-Hulk was the obvious candidate, which may have necessitated the release of a trailer earlier than planned.
