Met Office issues new thunderstorm warning for Dorset

GERM, “frequent lightning” and heavy rain can be seen in Dorset later today.

The Meteorological Service has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the country, including Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and the rest of Dorset.

The warning will be in effect between 7 pm on Wednesday evening and 3 am on Thursday.

Up to 25 mm of precipitation can be recorded per hour with a probability of 40 mm of precipitation in two or three hours in some places, the Meteorological Service said.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Emerging rains and thunderstorms are likely to intensify in parts of the warning zone in the evening before fading east after midnight. Many places are likely to avoid the heaviest rain and thunderstorms, but others may receive heavy rainfall and frequent lightning, while heavy hail and strong gusts of wind can also affect some places.

“Impacts are likely to be observed in the central parts of southern England. The amount of precipitation will be highly variable, as is usual in such situations, but the wettest places can see about 25 mm of rain within an hour and the opportunity to catch somewhere over 40 mm in 2 or 3 hours.

As for what to expect, Met Office says:

  • Splashes and flash floods can lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • When floods or lightning strikes occur, there may be delays and some cancellations of train and bus services, as well as possible power outages.
  • There is little chance of homes and businesses being flooded, with damage from floods or lightning strikes.

This comes just days after more than 4,000 lightning strikes were recorded in Dorset in just a few hours on Sunday night.

Dorset residents filmed the dramatic scenes on camera.

The meteorological service issued a yellow warning for the time before the big storm.
