Mitch Marner published a statement about car theft

Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner is speaking for the first time since he was robbed by his Range Rover at a Toronto movie theater earlier this week.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Marner called the incident “terrible” and thanked the Toronto community for “incredible” support after Monday’s car theft.

“To all the fans, my friends and teammates and the whole Maple Leafs organization – thank you for all your positive messages over the last few days,” Marner tweeted on Wednesday.

“It was a terrible situation, but we are safe and doing well. Thank you all – your support means the whole world to us. “

His statement follows what police called a “crime of opportunity”, involving three suspects, two armed with pistols and another with a knife, approaching and then taking off in Marner’s car in the Cineplex Cinemas Queensway area.

The events took place in the Islington Avenue and Queensway area on Monday around 7:45 p.m.

Toronto police say this is one of 60 car thefts they have responded to so far this year, compared to a total of 59 car thefts reported in 2021.

‘Fix my day’

After the theft of the car, Marner did not give any media interviews, but stopped to talk to a self-proclaimed “huge” fan of Leafs.

Dylan Attack stood in front of Etobicoke’s training base on Tuesday, hoping to catch a glimpse of several players.

First he saw William Nilander, then John Tavares.

“To my surprise, Marner stopped,” Attack told CTV News Toronto.

“He really made my day. He takes a few minutes of his day to stop for me after what happened Monday night.

As Marner signed a poster for the fan, Atak asked him how he was. “He said he had better days, but he looked in a good mood,” Atak said.

“After a bad week, there must be positivity.”
