Thousands across British Columbia without electricity, wind warnings in effect

Thousands of British Colombians are without electricity as some parts of the province cope with strong winds and rain.

Environment Canada has issued wind warnings for parts of the province, including parts of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and Fraser Canyon.

The weather forecaster expects a strong southwest wind with a speed of up to 70 km / h, in some areas with gusts up to 90 km / h.

At 11:45 a.m. PT, BC Hydro estimates that about 37,000 customers are without electricity, most of Vancouver Island.

Hydro reports downed trees on power lines in several areas.

Strong winds can cause trees and branches to break down power lines. If you see a fallen or damaged power line or pole, this is an emergency. Stay at least 10 meters away and dial 9-1-1: pic.twitter.com/FaZorzrv8M

Weather reports are valid for many mountain passes. Snow is forecast for some parts of the Coquihalla motorway, the TransCanada motorway and motorway 3.

DriveBC, the province’s highway information website, says the heavy fog has significantly reduced the visibility of parts of the Coquihalla highway.

CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstafe says the sky should clear up by Thursday morning and expects a mixture of sun and clouds in the second half of the week.
