Two Winnipeg men are facing firearms charges after police in Winnipeg confiscated 19 weapons from a home in the Southwood neighborhood.
The incident began on May 2, when the Police Firearms Investigation Department and the RCMP’s National Arms Enforcement and Maintenance Team launched an investigation into arms trafficking.
Police then received a search warrant for the Penal Code and a public safety order, which they executed on May 5 at a home in block 100 of Agassiz Drive.
At the time, officers arrested a man and seized 19 pistols, including three unlocked 9mm pistols; unlocked .45 caliber pistol; unlocked .22 caliber rifle; unlocked rifle 5.56; and a prohibited rifle AR-10 variant .308. Police also seized four air pistols.
On May 10, a second man went to Winnipeg Police Headquarters and was arrested.
A 22-year-old man and a 23-year-old man are facing charges in connection with the incident, including unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Both suspects were released on bail, and none of the charges against them have been proven in court.
A spokesman for the Winnipeg police said that in the last few years, officers had confiscated more weapons than ever, noting that they were confiscating an average of 2.5 weapons a day.
