The latest death brings the total to 34 since the beginning of 2022 and 55 since the beginning of the pandemic.

According to APH policy, no further details about the death have been released.

APH also reported a slight increase in the number of hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19, which increased by one in today’s update to a total of 22, and the number of patients admitted for COVID-related reasons by two to a total of four.

The number of patients in the intensive care unit with confirmed COVID-19 remained unchanged from yesterday’s update (three), as did the number of patients in the intensive care unit admitted for COVID-related reasons (one).

Algoma Public Health reports a reduction in the number of active cases in the region today. The total number of active cases today is 146, which is a decrease of 11 compared to yesterday.

The health unit reported only nine new confirmed cases today and reported 6,173 since the beginning of 2022 and 8,377 since the beginning of the pandemic. APH also reported 20 resolved cases today.

Note: As of December 31, 2021, the province has limited PCR tests for COVID-19 to the highest risk populations. In addition, some people with a mild or asymptomatic infection may not seek a test. Algoma Public Health points out that the number of confirmed cases is an underestimation of the actual number of people with COVID-19 in the Algoma region.
