The official death toll from COVID-19 in Manitoba jumped 66 in the latest weekly epidemiological report.
In a recent report covering May 8-14, provincial health officials said a total of 1,913 people in Manitoba had died from COVID-19, compared with 1,847 a week ago.
Not all of these deaths occurred during this one week, as the province regularly corrects the data as new cases are confirmed or eliminated.
In the week covered by the latest report, the province reported 16 new deaths. This is an increase from the previous week, when 11 new deaths were reported.
Seven new outbreaks were announced this week: three in hospitals and four in long-term care facilities.
Hospital admission decreased from 196 to 149. There are 16 admissions in intensive care units.
One of those admitted to the intensive care unit was a child under 10 years old.
Laboratory tests confirmed 766 new cases of COVID-19, down from 902 the previous week. The official number of cases underestimates the true number of infections due to the lack of access to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, the only test registered by the province.
The Manitoba test positive rate rose to 18.5% from 17.6% the previous week.
Laboratories perform an average of 832 tests for COVID-19 per day.
Monitoring of wastewater in Winnipeg on May 2 showed continued transmission of coronavirus, with reduced activity.
