The aftershocks of Tuesday’s major primary election continue to erupt in Pennsylvania, but one effect is already clear: Doug Mastriano’s election of Republican voters in the gubernatorial race is a blow to the Republican Party.
Talks with Republican strategists, donors and lobbyists in and outside Pennsylvania in recent days have revealed a party teeming with anxiety, disagreement and comparing results on Mastriano’s nomination.
On Tuesday night, Republicans openly used words and phrases such as “suicide mission”, “catastrophe” and “voyage on the Titanic” to convey exactly what disaster they thought his candidacy for their party would be.
An adviser to several Republican governors, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was very dissatisfied with the result, calling it ineligible. The Mastriano campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
Some in Pennsylvania accuse Jeff Yass, a billionaire, option trader and the most powerful donor in the state, of sticking with Bill Maxwayne for governor despite Donald Trump’s fierce anti-approval; others point to Lawrence Tabas, the party’s chairman, for failing to clear the ground; others say Trump should not have run in the race at all, instead of supporting Mastriano. Tabas did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.
The 11-hour effort to stop Mastriano failed when both Maxwaine and Dave White, a self-funded candidate who spent at least $ 5 million of their own money, refused to give up and support former Lu Louletta, whose supporters insisted that he is even more so. viable option.
Many Republicans thought this idea was useless and too late; several said a serious effort to prevent Mastriano’s victory was due to begin last summer, while others said Iasi and his allies could have missed Maxwayne sooner.

Mastriano garnered nearly 45 percent of the vote as of Wednesday afternoon.
Matthew Bruylet, head of the Commonwealth Partners, which funds Maxwayne’s campaign, noted that his organization also supports Carrie DelRosso, who won the vice governor’s race. He said the criticism came mainly from “consultants and rental seekers who we don’t like while we interrupt their sauce trains”.

Mastriano’s vulnerabilities are huge, GOP operatives complain.
The U.S. senator and retired U.S. military colonel has taken a firm stand on abortion, which he says should be illegal in all circumstances. Mastriano appeared at events related to QAnon, the amorphous conspiracy theory that claims that there is a secret conspiracy by elite pedophiles who run the federal government and other major US institutions. He has also made statements that go into Islamophobia.
He is likely to be a particularly weak candidate in the crowded suburbs of Philadelphia, the state’s most important political battlefield. On the other side of the state, the editorial page of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has almost officially approved Shapiro as “the only candidate in the state who did everything the way Pennsylvania did.”
Operatives from both parties expect Shapiro to target Mastriano with an advertisement portraying him as a dangerous extremist while Mastriano’s organization struggles to raise money.
Even before Mastriano won the nomination, Shapiro’s campaign aired an advertisement highlighting his views on abortion and the 2020 election, as well as his ties to Trump, who lost his state to Biden by 80,000 votes.
Mastriano gave scant indications during Tuesday’s victory speech that he was ready to move on to a more pleasant message for the general election. Enumerating his early priorities as governor, he said: “mandates are gone”, “all job requirements are gone”, critical racial theory is “over”, “only biological women can play in biological women’s teams” and “you can only use the bathroom, according to your biological anatomy. “
The duel with Mastriano also affects Shapiro’s carefully cultivated image as a pro-democracy activist, although his campaign plans to focus mainly on troubled economic issues such as jobs, taxes and inflation.
As Attorney General, Shapiro was directly involved in the Pennsylvania government’s lawsuit after the 2020 election and has witnessed at least 40 cases of alleged voter fraud, winning every single one.
Wait and see mode
Will the national republicans help Mastriano or avoid him? At the moment, it seems that the main players in the governor’s race are waiting to see how the race will develop before making this decision.
Some Republicans believe that the national “winds” that are blowing in their favor could help Mastriano win despite all his weaknesses, but for now Democrats are excited to face him in November. They note that Shapiro performed better than Biden in Pennsylvania during his re-election race as attorney general, and expect Shapiro to be flooded with donations from inside and outside the state.
On Tuesday night, the Association of Republican Governors issued a cool statement acknowledging Mastriano’s victory, but suggesting he is alone for now.
“Republican voters in Pennsylvania have chosen Doug Mastriano as their candidate for governor,” said Executive Director Dave Rexrod. “RGA remains committed to competing in competitive gubernatorial competitions where our support can have an impact.
The statement left room for the GOP governors to help Mastriano if the Pennsylvania race is near in the fall.
