Twitter has announced the introduction of a “crisis disinformation policy” that will seek to suppress publications that the company considers “viral disinformation”.
The social media platform announced the policy on Thursday with an official blog post. The feature will allow Twitter representatives to censor or block posts they deem misleading or false. The company said the crackdown would only be used in the event of a “humanitarian crisis”.
“Today we are introducing our crisis disinformation policy – a global policy that will guide our efforts to raise credible, authoritative information and help ensure that viral misinformation is not reinforced or recommended by us during crises. In times of crisis, misleading information can undermine public confidence and cause further damage to already vulnerable communities. “

“To reduce potential harm, as soon as we have evidence that a claim may be misleading, we will not expand or recommend content that is covered by this policy on Twitter – including the baseline, Search and Research,” Twitter said. . “In addition, we will give priority to adding alert notifications to highly visible tweets and tweets from high-profile accounts, such as state-linked media accounts, verified, official government accounts.
It is known that Twitter stopped The New York Post from its platform just before the 2020 elections due to the publication of a story about the existence of Hunter Biden’s laptop. IN laptop contained emails, text messages, photos and financial documents showing foreign business deals in which Biden’s first son and family were involved.
Twitter made an unprecedented effort to prevent the story from being shared, claiming it came from “hacked material”, which was an inaccurate statement.

However, Twitter has doubled its alleged commitment to oversee the app by announcing a real toolkit for manipulating data for use in posts.
The Twitter post continued: “Content moderation is more than just leaving or removing content, and we’ve expanded the range of actions we can take to ensure they’re proportionate to the severity of the potential harm. We’ve found that not expanding or recommending specific content, adding context through labels, and in severe cases, disabling tweet engagement are effective ways to mitigate harm while preserving speech and recordings of critical global events. “
In fact, the company announced at the end of its blog post that policy expansion was already being developed for “additional forms of crisis”.
“While this first iteration focuses on international armed conflicts, starting with the war in Ukraine, we plan to update and expand the policy to include additional forms of crisis. The policy will complement our existing work during other global crises, such as Afghanistan, Ethiopia and India. “
