A fire destroyed a building in downtown Hanover.
According to the Hanover Police Department, patrol officers noticed a fire in the building around 2:20 a.m. Thursday at the former Forum Rooming House on 10th Street.
The Hanover Fire Department was called and eventually sought mutual assistance from Walkerton, West Gray, Elmwood and intercity departments. Firefighters continue to fight the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Police are asking everyone to avoid downtown Hanover and close 10th Street to traffic and pedestrians between 9th Avenue and 11th Avenue.
At this point in the investigation, police believe that everyone fled the building, but due to the transient nature of many residents, employees continue to confirm that the fire did not result in loss of life.
Some pets belonging to residents may have died in the fire.
Two Hanover police officers received smoke inhalation treatment at the scene from Gray County paramedics.
Displaced residents are encouraged to attend Grace United Church, located on 12th Street in Hanover, where social services agencies have organized to provide assistance related to their basic and living needs.
The Hanover Police Department continues to investigate the causes of the fire, which remain unknown at this time in partnership with the Hanover Fire Service and the Fire Marshal’s Office.
HPS is at the site of a full-blown fire at Fabulous Fashions and the former Forum Rooming House. Fire crews from Hanover, Walkerton, West Gray and Elmwood continue to fight the blaze. We ask everyone to avoid the center of the center. 10th Street is closed from 9th Ave to pic.twitter.com/fUmewc2Lu9
