Palm City, Florida – Half a dozen Florida students posed for a photo in front of a high school while holding large letters inscribing racial insult, school officials said.

The school will follow its code of conduct for students in response to student actions, Martin County School District Chief John Miley said in a statement Thursday. He explained that state and federal laws do not allow the county to identify students or release other specific information about possible penalties. No school staff is involved, the statement added.

“We are deeply aware of the pain and anguish this photo has caused to our community, especially to our black Americans and students,” Miley said. “This incident is in stark contrast to our values and the ideals we instill in our students.

The photo shows six students queuing in front of Hiden Oaks High School in Palm City, a community about 35 miles (56 kilometers) north of West Palm Beach. Each student holds a large hand-painted letter, and students line up so that the letters are racially insulting. The photo was posted on social media earlier this week, officials said.

The district provides counseling to all students who need it, officials said.
