Four were stabbed in a knife attack in Norway

At least four people were stabbed and injured in an apparently accidental attack in southeastern Norway on Friday, with one of the victims in critical condition, police said.

The suspect has been detained, police added.

“I can confirm that the offender is under control,” a police spokesman told Reuters.

The stabbing took place in the village of Nore, located northeast of the capital Oslo. Several ambulances, including air ambulances, were at the scene, according to Norwegian TV2.

Delivery driver William Scott told VG he saw an injured woman lying on the ground after the attack.

“At first I thought it was a collision because there was a big pool of blood on the ground,” he said.

The attack comes two days after a Dane pleaded guilty to stabbing five people to death last October in a Norwegian town near Nore.

Local mayor Jan Gaute Bjerke told a television station that the attack took place near a primary school.

“The children were at school at the time of the attack,” he said.

He called the incident “tragic”.

Espen Andersen Braaten, 38, also admitted to trying to kill 11 others with a bow and arrow when he accidentally targeted people in Kongsberg, a small town 40 miles west of Oslo.

Police initially thought it was a “terrorist act” before realizing that Braaten was suffering from a mental illness at the time. The prosecution asked the court to sentence him to psychiatric care.

“We hope to get answers,” prosecutor Andreas Christiansen said before the trial, which is due to continue until June 22.
