A concert in a cave in Derbyshire was to be abandoned when a concert-goer got lost on the road and eventually fell into the cave, managing to cling to a tree on the way down.
The man ran into “extreme difficulty” trying to find the show at Peak Cavern in Castleton, locally known as the Devil’s Donkey. He had to be pulled to safety in a life jacket, which shortened the concert of comedian and songwriter John Suttleworth.
Ideal Mountain Rescue Services were called in to help Derbyshire police rescue a man Thursday night who was hanging 100 feet (30 meters) above the cave just before 9 p.m.

He later told rescuers that he had followed his navigation as he walked out of his quarters and somehow came across a footpath above the cave.

“He got into a lot of trouble and slipped, just catching a tree to stop his fall, inches from falling 100 feet to the floor of the cave,” Edale’s mountain rescuer said on Facebook. “Unfortunately, the concert had to be canceled and people had to be evacuated from the area due to the danger of throwing stones at the concert goers below.”
Rescuers installed a rope rescue system and sent a volunteer down to reach the man, where he was safe in what Mountain Rescue called a “rescue diaper.”
“The gentleman had received cuts and bruises over one eye, and he looked good and well. The team pulled both the rescuer and the gentleman back to the top of the cliff, where he was handed over to Hart. [Hazardous Area Rescue Team] paramedic for further evaluation. The gentleman did not need further hospital treatment and a member of the team took him to the accommodation, “said Edale mountain rescuers. Devil’s Ass is one of four show caves in Derbyshire that are open to visitors and regularly host concerts and other events. It has the largest cave entrance in the British Isles – 100 m long, 20 m high and 35 m wide – and contains the remains of a rope village. It got its colloquial name because of the noise inside the cave as the flood water drained away.
