Two people have been rescued and a third is missing after a fishing boat capsized off the west coast of Vancouver Island.
At around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, the Joint Rescue Coordination Center received reports that a 27-foot private fishing vessel with people on board had capsized at the mouth of the Nitinat Tarrows.
One survivor was discovered by Canadian Coast Guard Rapid Recovery Ship Bamfield 1, while a second survivor was spotted by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter based in Port Angeles and recovered from Canadian Coast Guard ship Atlantic Eagle.
Both survivors were transferred to BC EHS in Port Renfrew.
However, one remains unknown and is being searched by Parks Canada and an RCMP Air 8 helicopter to find him.
“The two survivors, who were located by the Coast Guard, were first taken to the port of Renfrew and then transported to a larger center for further medical treatment. said the sergeant. Chris Manso, BC RCMP Media Relations Officer. “RCMP Lake Cowichan continues to liaise with its search and rescue partners, who continue to search for the missing man.”
Nitinat Narrows is located about 35 km northwest of Port Renfrew.
Anyone who may have information about the incident or who saw the boat earlier on May 19 should contact the Lake Cowichan RCMP Squad at 250-749-6668.
