A large fire broke out near Geneva Airport in a partially built reception center for asylum seekers.
Images on social media show large streams of smoke swirling in the sky over Switzerland’s second busiest airport.
Airport spokesman Ignas Janerat told Swiss radio station RTS: “There is a building – the new reception center for asylum seekers that is being built … it is on fire. Located outside the perimeter of the airport. It creates a lot of smoke. “
Emergency services arrived on the scene and used a hose to clean the building, which was covered with scaffolding and tarpaulin.
The fire means that the airport has stopped the planes from landing and all take-off decisions are left to the discretion of the pilots, according to reports.
The interruptions are expected to occur for at least two more hours. Some planes have reportedly been diverted to other airports such as Lyon and Basel.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
