A tornado clock is in effect for several parts of central, southern Quebec

Environment Canada released a tornado clock in many parts of central and southern Quebec today.

Stretching from eastern towns through central Quebec – including Troyes-Riviera – to Quebec City, Environment Canada says conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could cause a tornado this afternoon.

Warnings were issued for the following regions: Eastern Towns, Beauce, Drummondville-Bois-Francs, Mauritius, Quebec City and Montmagny-L’Islet.

Heavy hail and heavy rainfall are also possible, the meteorological agency announced.

Calling it a potentially dangerous situation, the agency says people need to be prepared for hard times and should cover up immediately if severe storms approach.

To stay safe during a tornado, the agency recommends that you head indoors to the lowest possible level, away from walls and windows facing the outside, such as in a basement or closet. Choose a solid building, leaving mobile homes, trailers and cars behind. As a last resort, it is recommended to lie in a low place and protect your head from any flying debris.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” the meteorological agency said, adding to watch out for lightning.

Other areas, including Montreal and the Laurentians, are under warning of a severe thunderstorm.

A full breakdown of the warnings for each region of Quebec can be found on the Environment Canada public warning page.
