Cannes attending David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” to cause a stomach shock at the festival received an exciting surprise with the world premiere of Ruben Ostlund’s latest social satire, The Triangle of Sadness. The film won a standing ovation after a lively screening that prompted audiences at the Palais Theater in Cannes to scream in horror and delight.
“Triangle of Sadness” stars “Beach Rats” and “The Kingsman” actor Harris Dickinson as an ambitious model who gets the chance to rest aboard a luxury yacht after his girlfriend and influential people win them a free trip. Woody Harrelson plays the alcohol captain of the yacht. The yacht is full of pretentious and snobbish guests, who make up 1%, but they all receive their reward thanks to an extended 15-minute series in which a storm leads to an outbreak of seasickness.
This central stage won perhaps the most tumultuous reaction from the Cannes audience so far at the 2022 festival. Östlund retrieves the accumulation as the boat swings and guests are served oysters and sophisticated seafood dishes. Eventually, all hell breaks loose and the eruptions of vomiting and poop are shown in graphic detail. The audience in the palace screamed, closed their eyes and roared with laughter. Three attendees were spotted coming out of the Palais balcony in the middle of the series, but everyone else in the crowd responded with approval.
“Triangle of Sadness” is full of several other moments that made the audience gasp in shock, but it’s best to leave the rest of the film intact. The audience in Cannes reacted with eight minutes of applause, which was much stronger than the applause “Top Gun: Maverick” and other films won so far at the festival.
“What a wonderful screening,” Ostlund said when he handed him the microphone, his comment almost drowned out by the applause. “What an ensemble we had. Thank you so much!”
In addition to the audience’s reaction, Variety’s Peter Debrugge gave a strong review of The Triangle of Sadness, writing: an unwanted fly buzzing between characters struggling to communicate. ”
The last time Jostlund was in Cannes was with The Square in 2017, which won the Palme d’Or. Although there are many films that remain in competition for screening, the reaction to “Triangle of Sadness” suggests that he may be a contender for one of the awards in Cannes.
