COVID-19 in Ontario: 24 new deaths reported

Ontario reported 24 deaths from COVID-19 on Friday as hospitalizations and admissions to the intensive care unit continued to decline.

As of Friday, there were 1,165 patients in hospital due to COVID-19 and 163 patients in the Ontario Intensive Care Unit.

This marked a drop in hospitalizations from 1,207 patients in hospital on Thursday and more than 168 in intensive care on Thursday.

Of the 24 deaths reported, sixteen occurred in the last month, while eight occurred more than 30 days ago, according to the ministry.

Of Friday’s hospitalizations, 131 patients were unvaccinated and 760 fully vaccinated. The vaccination status of the remaining patients is partial or unknown.

Thirty-nine percent of patients hospitalized on Friday were admitted to COVID-19, while the remaining 61 percent tested positive after unrelated admission. In intensive care units these percentages are 53% and 47% respectively.

Of the patients currently being treated for COVID-19 in the Ontario Intensive Care Unit, 20 were unvaccinated and 73 were fully vaccinated. The vaccination status of the remaining patients is partial or unknown.

The province reported 1,412 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, but health officials warned that the number of cases was a significant underestimation due to limited testing.

With 14,413 tests processed in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health reports a positive assessment of at least 9.1 percent.

Today’s report puts the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases in Ontario at 1,293,226.
