During Friday’s tour of From Scratch, comedian John Mulaney surprised his audience – and drew criticism from some fans – when Dave Chapel appeared as the discoverer and told transphobic jokes.
Chappelle’s opening set took place during a show at the Value City Arena at the University of Ohio in Columbus, Ohio. Although there were no footage of the event, as attendees had to lock their phones in advance, several members of the audience turned to social media afterwards to criticize the show. According to those present, Chappelle appeared as a surprising start and told jokes aimed at the transgender community. Mulaney reportedly took the stage and hugged Chappelle at the end of the opening set. Some fans in the crowd expressed disappointment after the show on Twitter:
my favorite part of tonight was when Dave Chapel planted us on John Muleney’s show, told a bunch of transphobic jokes, a huge stadium of people laughed, and then John Muleney hugged him at the end

Jokes about the transgender community were a recent cornerstone of Chappelle’s stand. The comedian has sparked controversy for the first time over jokes about transfers in Netflix’s special programs such as “Sticks and Stones” from 2019 and the special “The Closer” from 2021. “The Closer” in particular has faced repulsion from groups such as GLAAD and the National Black Justice Coalition for humiliating jokes Chappelle made about trans women, as well as extended parts in which he defended previous anti-trance statements by rapper DaBaby and Harry Potter. ”By JK Rowling. Earlier this month, after being distracted during a Netflix is a Joke event, Chappelle sparked further controversy when it was joked that the attacker was a trans man.
Chappelle’s contradictory and humiliating statements contrast with Mulaney’s largely consistent material. In his position, Mulani tends to stay away from political or social issues, focusing on self-deprecating humor, anecdotes about his personal life and his fight against alcoholism and addiction.
After Mulaney began to enjoy popularity on Twitter the next day as a result of Chappelle’s surprise set, the comedians began to react in turn.
I promise there are no surprise guests against trans weird people on my summer tour.

Dave Chapel will not appear on my shows if this is what stops you from buying tickets.
