The war in Ukraine: What you need to know
The last: Severodonetsk, Ukraine’s most eastern-controlled city, is expected to be the next major battleground in the war, with local authorities reporting intense Russian shelling in recent days. Russia, meanwhile, took full control of the Azovstal steel plant in the Black Sea port city of Mariupol on Friday, saying more than 1,900 Ukrainian fighters from the facility have surrendered – although that figure far exceeds other estimates.
The battle: The slowly recovering Russian army is achieving gradual success in eastern Ukraine against valiant but under-equipped Ukrainian forces. The United States and its allies are vying to supply the vast quantities of weapons that Ukrainians urgently need if they want to keep the Russians at bay.
weapons: Ukraine is using weapons such as Javelin anti-tank missiles and Switchblade kamikaze drones provided by the United States and other allies. Russia has used a number of weapons against Ukraine, some of which have attracted the attention and concern of analysts.
