Leclerc occupies the GP pole of Spain

Leclerc will start before Max Verstappen of Red Bull and his Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz after a one-hour qualifying session divided into three segments with five cars, each of which will be eliminated in Q1 and Q2 before the Q3 top 10 shootout.

What happened in the Spanish Grand Prix Q1?

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez set the early pace at 1m20.447s and then gave a slipstream to Verstappen when he opened the lap, the world champion making 1m20.091s.

Sainz took P1 with 1m19.892s, but was quickly defeated by Leclerc at 1m19.861s. The duo of Mercedes George Russell and Lewis Hamilton took fourth and fifth place respectively.

Kevin Magnussen jumped to an impressive fifth in his last lap for Haas, ahead of Hamilton. Perez fell eighth, behind Valteri Botas’ Alfa Romeo, and then came out on turn 7 in an attempt for a second lap with a push.

The first hurdle was Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin – missed 0.074 seconds), Fernando Alonso (who suffered a disastrous lap that drove his Alpine into traffic), Lance Stroll (Aston) and the Williams duo of Alex Albon and Nicolas Latifi.

What happened in the Spanish Q2 Grand Prix?

Hamilton set the bar at 1m19.794s, but was quickly surpassed by Russell’s 1m19.470s as their rivals released used tires in the beginning.

On his last lap, Sainz took the P1 with 1m19.453s, 0.017s faster than Russell, who, like Hamilton and Leclerc (who dropped to seventh), did not run again.

However, Verstappen was not to be denied and he unleashed 1m19.291s in his run with a new tire, 0.234s away from the package. Magnussen took fifth again, ahead of Perez.

At that point, McLaren’s Lando Norris was knocked out, which was deleted as soon as possible to exceed the limits of turn 12, Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauris and Pierre Gasley and Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo).

What happened in the Spanish Q3 Grand Prix?

In the first runs, Hamilton set the early pace at 1m19.664s, which was beaten by Sainz at 1m19.423s and then Verstappen at an impressive 1m19.073s. Leclerc, meanwhile, spun on his first lap of the final chicane.

Perez took the P3, at four-tenths of the pace, ahead of Russell, Hamilton and Botas – with Leclerc dominating practice at the time.

In the last runs, Leclerc jumped to the pole of the sensational 1m18.750s, as Verstappen announced that he had “no power” and was forced to stop his last attempt. After the session, team boss Christian Horner said the problem with the DRS had affected Verstappen.

Sainz finished third behind Verstappen at 1m19.166s, despite a poor first sector. Russell finished fourth with 1m19.393s, ahead of Perez, Hamilton, Botas, Magnussen, Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) and Mick Schumacher (Haas).
