Ottawa Weather: A strong thunderstorm warning is in effect

Warnings of severe thunderstorms are in effect for Ottawa and parts of eastern Ontario, as a powerful storm is moving in the province.

Environment Canada says conditions are favorable for the development of strong thunderstorms, which could lead to strong winds, hail and the possibility of tornadoes in the Ottawa region.

“Meteorologists from Environment Canada are tracking a very dangerous thunderstorm that could cause destructive gusts of wind and hail to large proportions,” said Environment Canada.

A gust of 120 km / h was recorded at Ottawa Airport at 3:30 p.m. The 16-hour weather update included a gust of 113 km / h.

There are warnings of severe thunderstorms throughout the region.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Widespread and extremely strong gusts of wind can destroy buildings with tornado-like damage, level large tree plantations and throw vehicles off the road,” the warnings said.

A woman in Brampton, Ont. died after being hit by a tree during the storm.

The storm cut off power to tens of thousands of Hydro One customers in southern Ontario.

“Hydro One crews are responding to interruptions caused by strong thunderstorms passing through southwestern and central Ontario as quickly and safely as possible,” the company said.

Hydro Ottawa reports scattered outages affecting more than 104,000 customers in the city.

CTV’s Glenn McGregor tweeted a photo of a power line down Merviale Road.

The meteorological radar shows a storm with heavy rain, moving northeast from Michigan and southern Ontario late Saturday morning, passing through London, Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto. By 3:30 p.m., the storm had spread to Ottawa.
