The team announced on Friday that the 67-year-old Bownes is stepping down as head coach. His assistants John Stevens, Derek Laxdale and Todd Nelson will not return either.
Bowness’s contract with the team was expiring. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBron notes that the native of Moncton, NB, does not intend to retire.
The stars were eliminated from the playoffs in a series of seven games by the Calgary Flames last week.
Bownes was hired as Star’s interim head coach in December 2019 after Jim Montgomery was released.
He directed Dallas to the Stanley Cup finals in 2020 and was elected head coach later that fall.
The stars qualified for the 2021-22 playoffs as a wild card team after failing to reach the post-season in 2020-21.
Bowness has coached 639 NHL games with the Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders and Phoenix Coyotes, and has also served as assistant coach for the Vancouver Canucks and Tampa Bay Lightning.
Kevin Weeks was the first to leave Bownes.
