A strong thunderstorm caused extensive damage, fallen trees, downed power lines and power outages in the Waterloo region on Saturday.
The storm swept through southern Ontario on Saturday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and possible hail in some areas.
Around 12:30 p.m., Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro and Waterloo North Hydro reported power outages in their service areas. Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro said the crews were responding to “major damage” in its service area and would take some time to restore power.
Ontario provincial police said they had received reports of downed trees, power lines and heavy rains.

According to the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA), all trails and natural areas are closed while staff assess the damage. All protected areas on the Grand River remain open, except Lake Pinehurst. Updates on the status of the GRCA Protected Areas and the GRCA Trail and Natural Areas can be found on the GRCA website.
Kitchener said the Rockway and Doon Valley golf courses would be closed by the end of the day and more details would be available.
