Environment Canada says “potentially life-threatening” tornadoes could form in several southern areas of Quebec on Saturday.
Several regions have been placed under tornado monitoring, which means that conditions are “favorable” for tornadoes.
Warnings of severe thunderstorms lit up the mobile phones of Quebec residents, warning of extreme weather and encouraging residents to take shelter from approaching storms.
By 5 pm, 200,000 people were without electricity, according to Hydro Quebec.
“We want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to restore power as quickly as possible,” the company said in a statement on its website.
WHAT TO DO IF A TORNADO IS FORMED
If a tornado occurs, Environment Canada recommends that people enter an indoor room on the lowest floor, away from exterior walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell, or interior closet.
“Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelters and move to a strong building if you can,” said a council on their website.
“As a last resort, lie down and protect your head from flying debris. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember that when there is thunder, go indoors!”
