Ukraine’s Zelensky is proposing a formal agreement on compensation from Russia

May 20 (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky proposed a formal deal Friday with the country’s allies to secure Russian compensation for damage caused by its forces during the war.

Zelensky, who says Russia is trying to destroy as much of Ukraine’s infrastructure as possible, said such a deal would show nations planning aggressive action that they will have to pay for their actions.

“We call on the partner countries to sign a multilateral agreement and create a mechanism to ensure that anyone who has suffered from Russia’s actions can be compensated for all their losses,” he said in a video message.

Zelensky said that in such a deal, Russian funds and property in the signatory countries would be confiscated. They will then be directed to a special compensation fund.

“It simply came to our notice then. And Russia will feel the weight of every missile, every bomb, every projectile that has fired at us, “he said.

Canada said last month it would amend its sanctions law to allow for the redistribution of confiscated and sanctioned foreign assets to compensate victims or help rebuild a foreign country from war. Read more
