WASHINGTON (AP) – Rudy Giuliani, who as a lawyer for then-President Donald Trump posed false legal challenges to the 2020 election, is meeting for hours with a House of Representatives committee investigating the January 6, 2021 uprising in the US Capitol , a man familiar with the interview said on Saturday.
The interview with Giuliani was conducted virtually and lasted most of the day on Friday, according to a spokesman for the Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the private meeting. A spokesman for the commission declined to comment.
Giuliani was due to meet with the commission earlier this month, but a group spokesman said the meeting had been postponed.
The former mayor of New York is seen as a critical aide to the commission, which interviewed nearly 1,000 witnesses, including members of Trump’s family and advisers close to him. The panel is planning a series of hearings in June.
In January, the commission summoned Giuliani and other members of Trump’s legal team who tried to overturn election results in states on the battlefield through lawsuits that made unfounded allegations of massive election fraud. Trump’s attorney general, William Barr, said there were no widespread irregularities that could affect the outcome of the race won by President Joe Biden, and judges across the country dismissed the allegations.
During the summons, the commission said it was looking for recordings and interviews with Giuliani and asked for information about Giuliani’s reported encouragement to Trump to lead the seizure of voting machines and his efforts to persuade state lawmakers to take steps to overturn the election.
Giuliani also spoke at a rally in front of the White House ahead of the January 6 uprising.
CNN first reported on an interview with Giuliani on Friday.
