BC Highways: Speeding, “wrong” rally drivers with tickets

According to Mounties, twenty high-end rally cars traveling from Vancouver to Calgary for racing were captured and announced tickets earlier this month for chaotic driving.

Police began receiving calls about the group of cars traveling on Highway 1 inside BC around 8 a.m. on May 6.

“The callers described the cars as driving incorrectly, crossing dangerously over double solid lines and in oncoming traffic, driving at excessive speed and completely neglecting public safety,” the Golden RCMP said in a statement.

When police stopped the cars, they saw that everyone had stickers identifying them as participants in an event called the RCS Rally. A statement from Mounties said the drivers had cooperated. However, some slips were issued for “their way of driving”, the presence of cannabis in vehicles and vehicle defects.

The Golden RCMP said that while supporting organized events for drivers, traffic rules must be followed when driving on provincial highways.

“Those who do not follow the rules put themselves and innocent drivers at risk and may be subject to tickets, confiscation of vehicles and, where evidence supports it, criminal charges,” said spokesman Const. Mark Tatarin in a press release.

“In this case, it is fortunate that the vehicles were stopped before anyone was injured.”
