In early April, we heard that Ethan Cohen (known as the Cohen Brothers) was making his own solo film, his first after a very long and successful career in collaboration with his brother, who made his debut solo film last year with The Macbeth Tragedy. ). Ethan Cohen’s solo film, a documentary called Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble In Mind, is now set to premiere in Cannes, seemingly consolidating his new status as a lone director who doesn’t need his brother around.
Although, based on Cohen’s interview with Deadline, it doesn’t sound like he minds having a brother around. Much of the interview is based on the fact that Jerry Lee Lewis married his teenage cousin, which Cohen tries to at least contextualize without necessarily apologizing (he notes that Lewis is the “original canceled man”, but touches on your relationship with his brother at the end, when we talk about what it’s like to edit the film without him.
Instead, he works with editor Trisha Cook, his wife, which he simply says is “different from doing it with Joel.” He told Deadline that there were “many times” when problems popped up and he was “stuck”, saying, “I’d think Joel would have an idea of what to do here,” so where the hell is he? ”Cohen says he and Cook have“ another one, ”but he thinks“ something will come ”for him and his brother. “It’s kind of great not to have a plan,” he said, “and so that plan doesn’t rule anything out.”
Cohen also hinted at a potential reason for his breakup with his brother, saying they would always finish one film and think about the next one right away, but now they are both “calmer” and happier to accept anything. So he seems very confident that he and his brother will drive together again one day.
