Republican Sen. Mitt Romney suggested in an essay in the New York Times that NATO could “engage with Ukraine,” potentially erasing Russia’s militant military “as an option against Russian President Vladimir Putin if he deploys nuclear weapons.

The Utah senator also suggested that the West stand up to China and other allied nations of Russia with an ultimatum.

“Either you’re with us or you’re with Russia – you can’t be with both,” Romney wrote.

“Russia’s use of nuclear weapons would undoubtedly be a redefining, reorienting geopolitical event,” Romney continued. “Any nation that chooses to maintain ties with Russia after such a disgrace will also become a global pariah.”

Romney warned that the “cornered and deluded” Putin could use nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine, citing warnings from former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov and CIA Director William Burns.

In April, Burns warned that “Putin’s” despair “could lead to the use of ‘tactical or low-yield nuclear weapons.’

Romney also encouraged the United States to continue to support Ukraine’s military efforts against Russia. If the United States stops sending weapons and pressures Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to cede to Russia, Romney writes, Putin will continue to “invade and subdue” other nations.

President Joe Biden signed a $ 40 billion aid package to help Ukraine on Saturday; $ 20 billion will go to military aid.

Romney has spoken out against his disregard for Putin since the start of the war, calling the Russian president in February a “small, evil man with wild eyes” who is trying to shape Russia into an “empire”. He also called the pro-Putin GOP members “traitorous”.

This week, Russian political scientist Alexei Fenenko told 60 Minutes that Putin’s invasion of Ukraine was a “rehearsal” for a bigger conflict and that they were using the war to “test and confront” NATO weapons.
