US President Joe Biden is on a visit to promote the alliance in Asia, a belated first trip to a region that remains central to its foreign policy goals, although its focus has shifted.
Biden’s suspension of two loyal US allies – South Korea and Japan – aims to strengthen partnerships in a time of global instability. As Biden and his team spent much of their time and resources on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, North Korean provocations intensified and China continued to expand its economic and military power.
The president is making his first visit to Asia later in his presidency than he would like, according to officials, who say Covid’s restrictions and other crises have hampered travel planning. Biden is the third consecutive US president to try to shift foreign policy to Asia, although interventions often hinder it.
