SNL bids farewell to Kate McKinnon and Pete Davidson

In Saturday night’s episode, the NBC variety show bids farewell to Kate McKinnon and Pete Davidson in subtle but emotional ways. The show first said goodbye to McKinnon, opening the show with a re-enactment of one of the comedian’s most memorable sketches, The Close Encounter.

Saturday’s cold opening brought Miss Rafferty back to McKinnon, a kidnapped alien who is having a harder time than her colleagues.

After Miss Rafferty explains to McKinnon what happened to her (in vivid and crude detail, no less) during her alien abduction, two government agents, played by Eddie Bryant and Mikey Day, explain that she is now she has to go with the aliens who took her.

This led to a very touching moment for McKinnon, who landed on the makeshift spaceship and allowed her character and herself to say goodbye.

“Well, Earth, I love you, thank you for letting me stay for a while,” McKinnon’s character said with a hand on her heart, looking at the audience.

Then she said the characteristic phrase of the show: “Live … from New York. It’s Saturday night!” This was followed by loud applause for McKinnon.

As for Davidson, he received one last segment in the SNL weekend update.

“I never imagined this would be my life,” Davidson said. “I was just a skinny kid then, and no one knew what race I was from. And now everyone knows I’m white because I was extremely successful when I was barely out of work. Look at me now, I’m getting old like an old banana. “

Davidson added during the segment that SNL creator Lorne Michaels told him during his first audition that he did not think Davidson was suitable for the show, but “let’s fuck this together.”

“And that’s exactly what we did,” Davidson said. “And that’s why people who think I don’t deserve this job shouldn’t hate me because we have so much in common. For example, if nothing else, I need to inspire hope that literally everyone can be on Saturday Night Live.

Prior to the show, Davidson said goodbye on Instagram on Saturday, writing that “he needs to share so much with this audience” and “literally grow before your eyes.”

“We were together through the good and the bad, the happiest and darkest times,” Davidson continued. “I owe my life to Lorne Michaels and everyone on SNL. I’m so grateful I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Davidson thanked the show for teaching him the values of life and said, “SNL is my home.”

“I am so happy and sad about the show tonight. “For so many reasons I can’t explain,” he wrote.

Bryant also received a release during the Weekend Update when she appeared alongside Bowen Young as their recurring characters with forecast trends. The segment ended with Bryant declaring “10 Good Years” as “in” and receiving roses and a kiss on the cheek from Young and Weekend Update co-author Michael Che.

Variety announced on Friday that McKinnon, Davidson, Bryant and Kyle Mooney are expected to leave the show later this season.
