The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defender Mark Giordano on a two-year, $ 1.6 million contract with an average annual value of $ 800,000.
The 38-year-old has scored eight goals and scored 35 points in 75 games last season between Maple Leafs and the Seattle Kraken. He made two assists in seven playoff games as the Maple Leafs were eliminated in the first round by consecutive Stanley Cup champions Tampa Bay Lightning.
An undrafted free agent, Giordano joined the Calgary Flames in 2004, where he spent 15 years. He was captain of the Flames for eight seasons. He won the Norris Trophy in 2019 and was named All-Star three times. Giordano was claimed by Kraken for an expansion project in 2021 and was named the first captain in the franchise’s history. He was sold to Maple Leafs along with Colin Blackwell the day before the deadline to trade in exchange for the draft.
He is stepping down from a six-year contract worth $ 40.5 million with an average annual value of $ 6.75 million.
The Toronto-born has 151 goals and 544 points in 1,024 NHL career games between the Flames, Kraken and Maple Leafs.
