Driver accused of hitting an RCMP employee while fleeing Checkstop

A man from Cochrane is facing charges after the RCMP said the driver speeded away from Checkstop in the community northwest of Calgary on Friday.

Police were conducting an operation on Glenbow Drive in Cochrane shortly before midnight when a vehicle stopped.

The police started talking to the driver, when he suddenly accelerated, hit a police officer.

“A second police officer had to jump off the road to avoid the collision,” a police statement said.

The vehicle was seen entering the Sunset neighborhood and Cochrane and Stoney Nakoda RCMP officers began searching the area.

“Within minutes, the driver was found and arrested. The employee went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later released,” police said.

William Richard Kinning, 39, is charged with:

  • Failure to stop police harassment;
  • Driving a motor vehicle in a dangerous way, causing bodily harm;
  • Assault on a police officer with a weapon;
  • Driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol, and;
  • Driving a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration above 80 mg.

He was released on bail and is due to appear in court on May 31.
