Bandcamp may see delayed payments to artists over lawsuit to preserve Android payment system – Tech

The new owner of Bandcamp Epic Games and Google have reached an agreement on incoming changes to purchases in the Google application.

In a blog post published by Bandcamp CEO Ethan Diamond, the company explained that it will continue to use the existing process in the app while Epic Games and Google are underway.

Instead of having to switch to the new Google Play billing system – which requires all apps in the Google Store to use Google’s payment system and give 30% of all sales in the Google app – Bandcamp will continue to invest its usual share of revenues from 10% deposit holding.

This means that when the Google Play billing system comes into play on June 1, the escrow model will begin.

“Moving forward, we will continue to fight to allow business models like ours on Android,” the statement said.

However, due to this change in the payment system, the company said that this could lead to artists not receiving payment as quickly as they currently are. They say: “Instead of receiving payment after 24 to 48 hours, artists may not receive payment until 15 to 45 days after the sale.”

“We know that many people use Bandcamp’s Android app to listen to their music purchases, and we are committed to ensuring that this option remains available.

“With today’s submission, we hope to ensure that fans can continue to buy music and merchandise through the Android app and that as much of their support as possible will reach the artist as soon as possible.”
