COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – Denmark will provide vaccines produced by Bavarian Nordic for close contact with those infected with monkeypox, the Danish health service told public television DR on Tuesday.
“Health authorities will provide the vaccine to people in close contact with those infected,” said director Bolet Soborg of DR.
“The vaccine will be given after a person has been exposed to the infection and aims to reduce the risk of serious disease,” Soborg added.
It was not immediately clear whether Denmark had the vaccines in stock or whether the authorities would have to buy the vaccines. Health officials and the health ministry were unable to comment immediately when they contacted Reuters.
There are more than 100 suspected or confirmed cases of monkeypox in Europe and North America – a disease common in West and Central Africa – according to the World Health Organization. Denmark has registered two cases of monkeypox infection during the current epidemic.
