Five killed, dozens trapped after building collapses in Iran, state television reports

DUBAI, May 23 (Reuters) – Five people died when a 10-storey building in the southern Iranian city of Abadan partially collapsed and rescuers tried to help at least 80 people trapped in the rubble, Iranian state television reported on Monday. .

The semi-official Mehr news agency identified the building as a residential and commercial property on Amir Kabir Street in the city, which is close to the Iraqi border.

State television said ambulances had been sent from other cities to help with the rescue operation, with two rescue dogs, a helicopter and seven rescue vehicles already in place. It showed footage of angry Abadan residents shouting slogans against city officials.

The head of the Khuzestan province’s judicial system has ordered an investigation into the collapse of the building, and the owner and contractor who built it have been arrested, state television reported.
