Former US Vice President Mike Pence made a late intervention in the Republican primary in Georgia today, breaking with Donald Trump to support a rival candidate as the two consider running for the White House in 2024.
Pence was due to appear at a rally in support of Brian Kemp, Georgia’s governor, who faces a challenge from David Purdue, a former senator backed by Trump.
With Kemp still ahead of Perdue on the eve of the election, the race is expected to be Trump’s biggest defeat in the primary season, heading for a crucial midterm election in November.
Pence and Trump are believed not to have spoken for a year, as the former refused to intervene at the insistence of the latter and
