Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro users aren’t impressed with Google’s $ 30 first-case cases. Looking at Reddit and Amazon reviews, there are dozens of people who complain about the clear plastic, which shows extreme yellowing, distortion or just does not fit the phone from the factory. Some users have posted some rough-looking photos of their cases, saying they have worsened from a few months to just two or three weeks. An editor here at The Verge says their case has also begun to look “a little dirty.”
Although there are many positive reviews of the cases, it is difficult to ignore the number of complaints. It also seems unlikely that this is just a bad batch of cases. There is a topic on Reddit that has been complaining about the problem since January and one with almost the same complaints from just a few hours ago. Some reviews also mention that the cases are starting to change shape around the buttons or the bottom, which would make me personally worried about its ability to protect my phone. Google did not immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment on whether these were known issues.

Anyone who has bought a translucent phone case for $ 10 is probably very familiar with this type of fast discoloration. For the most part, this is just a fact of life with translucent plastics. Even many of the negative reviews admit that they expected the discoloration to happen at some point; they just didn’t expect it to happen in a few weeks or months, nor did they expect it to look so ugly when it did. Personally, I don’t think I’ve seen it so badly since the early 2010s.

Again, however, this is not some lucrative deal, a nameless case; it was sold and branded by the same company that makes the phones. There is an additional sting that this is a problem that Google has solved in the past. Several of my colleagues had fond memories of the fabric covers the company made for phones like the Pixel 4A and Pixel 5, as well as a few Reddit commentators (although there were a lot of complaints). Obviously, they did not have the same problem with yellowing, and if they get dirty, you can clean them relatively easily.
Fortunately, there are a lot of third-party Pixel cases these days, but it’s a little disappointing that getting the official one is such a gamble. At least these reports began to appear before Pixel 6A was released; if Google offers similar cases for its more budget phone, it may be best to beware unless the company says it has fixed the issue.
