The death of Jeremy Stevens

Grief follows its clock.

Four years ago this week, Jeremy Stevens was shot and killed by Summerside police. For four years, every day has been the same for his mother.

“It’s hard. It’s the first thing I think of when I open my eyes in the morning, the last thing I think of when I close my eyes at night,” says Gilda Stevens. “Everyone in my family is affected.”

Stevens was suspected of robbery on the night of the shooting, and police attempts to detain him resulted in the deadly use of force against a young man with a history of depression, mental illness, drug addiction and crime.

Four years later, members of the extended Stevens family are seeking to end their grief – and for a broad, fully public investigation into what happened.

“I need answers,” Gilda Stevens told CBC News. “We are still stuck on May 27, 2018.”
