St. Mary’s Bay is back in the fishing business. After about a year of twisting hands behind the scenes, the St. Mary’s Fish Factory received a new license for the primary processing of land fish (all species), tufts and snow crabs.
Fisheries Minister Derrick Bragg announced the decision this morning.
This will certainly anger many in the industry, as they see such a move as taking away work from them to give new players. Workers at several factories have protested in recent weeks, urging the minister to reject St. Mary’s application.
The license for snow crabs will be limited to the purchase of raw materials not exceeding 2.5 million pounds.
In addition, Dandy Dan’s fish market in Argentina has been approved for 2 million pounds, an increase of one million.
